Wednesday 26th September
Another blustery but bright evening for the last Wednesday evening race of 2018. With sunset at 19:08 the race was shorter than normal but no less challenging. Wendy had set a great course of Meath, Clipera, Meath Clipera and finish, all to starboard. I like those kind of races so that I don’t forget which way to go round the mark!
With an entry of 4 yachts the countdown was eagerly awaited as the winds from the ssw gusted from 18 to 25kt. As usual there is a great deal of concentration required behind the start line as the boats vie for position through the moored vessels. All went well and the yachts all made a clean start with Rhumbull and Carpe Diem first over the line, Flair and Vision following closely.
Soon though Flair caught up with Rhumbull and as Rhumbull forced Flair up she dived very tightly round the stern and headed down to the end of the breakwater. Rhumbull, in an attempt to retake first place on this reech raised her asymmetric bu, oh wow, some desperate scenes as the kite broached with the boat exposing large sections of her underneath!

Race no 5 2018-08-29
Yet another light wind forecast but this week the wind due to fill in later. It was great to see Madam Wen back in the group after a busy August.
Circling round the moored boats in preparation for the start the six yachts were preparing for a downwind leg on a basic course set by the OOD Wendy, Clipera (s), Penrhos (p) and Finish. Incantation was first off with Flair in hot pursuit with her spinnaker already flying. Rhumbull was in 3rd place as she stayed out towards the breakwater with her asymmetric spinnaker on a broad reach. As she tacked and headed back on starboard tack there was some close sailing with Flair, on a dead run, having just overtaken Incantation to port needing to bear away to starboard, thus gybing, to avoid a collision with Rhumbull, forcing Incantation, now flying her spinnaker, to also gybe. Once clear to turn round Rhumbull’s stern Flair gybed back but that completely blanketed Rhumbull’s sails and in the very light winds all this action was fairly tense with a deal of shouting!
Once successfully past this danger point Rhumbull continued on her 120° wind angle across towards the moorings while Flair and Incantation continued on their dead downwind course directly to Clipera.
As Rhumbull gybed and sailed back on port tack she was just astern of Flair who had pulled out a reasonable lead over Incantation and Madam Wen as they passed the Aluminium Jetty. The duel continued with Rhumbull continuing to tack down wind but Flair remained ahead as the two yachts reached Clipera. Incantation was third at the mark with Madam Wen fourth and Vision and Hellhound bringing up the rear.

Wednesday Race 4 2018-06-27
Over the last few days we have been experiencing the centre of a high pressure area but with the centre moving east the forecast for the evening race was good 11kt northeasterly. It certainly didn’t look that way inside the harbour! The assembling yachts struggled to find sufficient wind to maneuver up to the start line.
The fleet of 6 yachts managed, considering the wind conditions to make good starts with Incantation, recently back in the water, moving well alongside Flair as they tacked up the harbour towards the large cruise liner on the Aluminium Jetty.

Race 1 2018-07-04
From my hospital bed in Lithuania it was wonderful to wake up to see the photos published by Susan Powney on the Holyhead Facebook Group and to see that in my absence Cogger had done the job on the results. Wish I had been there but I’m making great progress over here and will be back soon.
So by the look of it Jetstream got away first on another downwind start with a very light north westerly breeze; chased by Carpe Diem and Hydrology with Incantation searching for wind in the area under the breakwater. Vision not in the photo but I gather she retired later in the race.
The race time for the first boat over the water was a mere 1:13:18 with the last boat completing the race with an elapsed time of 1:42:04. I suspect that the winds died away in the later stages of the race giving the faster boats the overall advantage but I hope to have some more detail to add later...
It certainly looked like another great evening in HolyMed.

The handicapping on the NHC system shows Jetstream increasing her, already high, NHC number to 1.062 which is 7% over her base handicap. All the other competing yachts dropping their NHC numbers slightly and all below their base figures except for Carpe Diem who is still sailing above her base handicap by 2%.

A beautiful day but not quite so good for sailing… The squib fleet had been out in the morning and some of the sailors moved swiftly onto the offshore fleet to take part in the race in some very fickle NW winds in the harbour.
There was so little wind at the start that navigation round the start line pin end was a little difficult but the 3 yachts got away with Rhumbull and Jetstream leading off with Flair struggling to get some way on as she tried out her lightweight spinnaker.
The course selected was Bolivar, Penrhos and finish and the start was delayed until 14:10 to avoid the two ferry departures at 13:50 and 14:10; however it took some time for the leading yacht to get anywhere near to the harbour entrance!
As they sailed across the bay out of the harbour there were patches where there was almost no wind and both Jetstream and Rhumbull pretty much stopped. Flair sailing from a long way behind Rhumbull and a little to leeward started to overhaul her but at they approached Bolivar and had to tack they were still behind by the time they rounded the mark.
