Race 5 31st May
A good steady 10kt SSW breeze with some drops of rain falling as the severn crews prepared for the start of the last race in the May Wednesday Evening series. Lily was first away over the line close to the breakwater with Houdini, Carpe Diem and Just Enough fighting for space in the middle of the harbour. It was another starboard spinnaker leg from the knuckle and as the yachts left the harbour Just Enough had a lead over Lily. From the lighthouse the course to Bolivar was almost dead downwind and the symmetric spinnakers were well suited to this leg. Unfortunately for Lily her "Mr Motivator" spinnaker split on one panel and she was forced to drop the kite early as she approched Bolivar. The tide run at Bolivar was again quite significant but the 3 leading yachts rounded the mark bow to stern Just Enough followed by Lily and Houdini.

7th May 2017 Sunday Cruiser Race
We only had two entries for the race today; Just Jay and Lily. The winds were light and a bit fickle in the harbour but Northerly ranging from 5kt to 12kt. The start was delayed for Nigel getting away from Optimist Sailing and Mark having to get crew member Matt to the mast head to remove the block on the spinnaker halyard. The start time was set for 13:25 and the two yachts got good starts with Just Jay marginally ahead of Lily. Course 4, the same as last Wednesday was chosen with a chance that we might shorten at Clipera if the wind didn't freshen.
It was a beautiful day for sailing with the winds from last week having lessened and as the yachts reached Clipera Just Jay had gained a good lead. Rounding Clipera Lily had a really good spinnaker hoist to dispell all doubts following last Wednesday's race. The leg from Clipera to Penrhos was dead downwind with a bit of tidal effect and Lily managed a deeper line than Just Jay but she still rounded Penrhos well ahead of Lily.

Race 3 - 16th April
Just 2 yachts competing in race 3 as Lily was resting for some maintenance before going to Pwllheli for the first ISORA race on 22nd April. However as Lily is on Mooring A2 she is pretty well perfectly aligned along the start line and Mark as OD gave the two yachts a count down for the start.
Just Enough got a good start close to the wall and managed to keep ahead of Just Jay as they left the harbour. What happened next is anyone's guess but I hear that Just Enough went trawling with her kite and Just Jay had to make way for the ferry.
As the yachts raced back into the harbour Just Enough was a fair way back and on corrected time was some 3 minutes behind.

Race 4 Wednesday Evening Cruiser April 2017
This week we welcomed Houdini and Beck IV back into the racing fleet. Wendy, OOD, set course 3 and re-stated the correct rounding for Lily's benefit. Winds were northerly and very gusty as the yachts started with large holes in the wind appearing on the section between the nuckle and the harbour entrance. Lily got off to a flying start and lead all the way to the entrance with Just Jay just catching her as they headed out towards Bolivar. Houdini following closely behind and, as usual making excellent progress to windward. Lily made a tactical error tacking away to port to try and get a tidal advantage but this backfired and left Just Jay and Houdini pushing Lily to 3rd place as they rounded Bolivar. Madam Wen in 4th and then Just Enough and Beck IV.

At Holyhead Sailing Club we are trying to get more yacht owners involved in our club events and to increase the visibility of our club in the IRC Racing Scene by entering events organised by other bodies such as ISORA and the IRC Welsh National Championships in Pwllheli. The club runs what are known as tandem race results system where races are scored under both NHC and IRC handicaps. Two trophies are awarded for each month's series across the year and although the presentation at the AGM was very confusing, your chances of silverware are increased, so come on get registered...
The NHC handicap is a varaible handicap, like a golf handicap, which changes depending on each result in a series and aggregated over the year. The IRC handicap is based on an algorithm with data from the boat design, rigging and sails allowing your results to be compared to the theoretical performance of the yacht; this system does not change over the year, unless you make changes to the sails or rigging.
The NHC handicap is to encourage variation in the results and the IRC lets you see how your crew's performance is improving over the year. The IRC certificate varies from year to year based on a variety of different details and consequently we require a valid IRC Certificate for 2017 for anyone intending to compete in the IRC Fast Cruiser Class. Currently the club has the following yachts registered or applying for their 2017 certificates.
